Droopy Eyelids: Can They be Fixed?

Droopy Eyelids: Can They be Fixed?

What are Dermatochalasis and Blepharochalasis?

Many people suffer from excessive upper or lower eyelid tissue that can affect your visual field as well as cosmetic appearance. A general low-lying lid condition is often referred to as a "ptosis". Ptosis can be caused by neurologic, mechanical, or benign factor that should be addressed with your eye doctor. Two common benign conditions that can cause an eyelid ptosis are Dermatochalasis and Blepharochalasis. Dermatochalasis is a common laxity of the skin that creates a drooping or "saggy" appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. This is typically age-related and can be hereditary. Blepharochalasis is caused by excessive skin and protruding fat that can cause a similar appearance of a lid droop or bags under the eyes. This is an inflammatory response that can occur at any age.

Will my insurance cover the cost of an eyelid lift?

Blepharoplasty is a medical procedure that may be covered by your insurance if the excess skin interferes with your functional visual field. This can be determined by having a "Visual Field Test" performed by your Optometrist. The testing will determine if, and to what degree, the eyelids disrupt your line of sight.

Visual Field Testing: Suprathreshold

The Suprathreshold is a specific test that checks your superior peripheral vision. If your eyelid(s) droop over the pupil (the black area in the center of your eye responsible for letting light in), this will prevent you from seeing flashes or images in the upper periphery.
